Hassan Mir

Cardiologist and Assistant Professor of Medicine


Hassan Mir, MD, FRCPC, is a cardiologist in the Divisions of Cardiology and Cardiac Prevention and Rehabilitation at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, and an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Ottawa. 

Dr. Mir received his B.Sc. (Hon) in Life Sciences at McMaster University. He went on to complete his undergraduate medical education at the University of Western Ontario. From there, he completed his internal medicine and cardiology residency training at McMaster University, where he served as a chief resident in 2015 and 2018, respectively. Dr. Mir went on to complete additional fellowship training in advanced echocardiography (2018-2020) and cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation (2019-2020) at the University Health Network, University of Toronto.

Dr. Mir has a strong interest in clinical research and recently completed the Program in Clinical Effectiveness at Harvard University (2020). He is concurrently pursuing his Master of Health Informatics at the University of Toronto (2020-2022) and Master of Public Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (2021-2022). Throughout his training, Hassan has been recognized for his outstanding clinical, research, and leadership skills at the local, national, and international level. Dr. Mir has received over $200,000 in peer-reviewed funding to support his research activities to date.

Dr. Mir is currently an executive member of the Health Promotions Committee of the Canadian Society of internal Medicine, and an executive member of the American College of Physicians Ontario Chapter.  He is also a member of the Awards Subcommittee of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Dr. Mir has received several awards. At McMaster University, Dr. Mir received the Internal Medicine Dr. Hui Lee Award and the Postgraduate Medical Education Resident Leader Award. He was also recognized by the Hamilton Health Sciences Medical Staff Association with an award for outstanding clinical service. Dr. Mir has been recognized by the Ontario Medical Association with the Resident Achievement Award, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada with the Kristin Sivertz Resident Leadership Award, and the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine with the Hui Lee Health Promotion Award. Also, Hassan has been recognized by the American College of Physicians for the Ontario Chapter Excellence Award, the Ontario Chapter Laureate Award, and the American College of Cardiology Leadership Forum Scholarship.

Dr. Mir’s clinical practice includes outpatient and inpatient general cardiology. Dr. Mir is an expert in advanced echocardiography with a special interest in interventional echocardiography. He uses echocardiography to assist with planning and guiding minimally invasive transcatheter interventions for valvular and structural heart disease. Dr. Mir plays an integral role in the Division of Cardiac Prevention and Rehabilitation as well as in the Smoking Cessation Program at the UOHI.
